The region of Ciudad Vieja holds special significance in the country’s coffee story — not only as one of the first Spanish colonial capitals of Central America, but also as one of the earliest places where coffee was introduced to Guatemalan soil in the mid-19th century.

The volcanic soils of Sacatepéquez are among the most nutrient-rich in the Americas. Coupled with consistent rainfall, cool mountain breezes, and high elevations, this region naturally fosters slow cherry development, leading to the kind of dense, sweet, and complex beans for which Guatemalan coffee is world-renowned.

The producers behind Proyecto Ojo de Agua live and farm along the slopes of Volcán de Agua, between the communities of San Miguel Escobar and Ciudad Vieja. For most families, coffee cultivation is not only their primary source of income, but a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Many of the producers continue to work small farm plots and parcels using traditional practices deeply connected to the land and the rhythms of the harvest.

These conditions have supported countless smallholder producers who, for decades, have cultivated Bourbon and other varieties under the canopy of native shade trees, often using traditional methods passed down through families.

FARM

Proyecto Ojo de Agua began as a collective initiative made up of eight producers, each managing their own small plot of land — often no more than a few hectares. During the 2025–2026 harvest, the project experienced significant growth, expanding from 8 to nearly 40 producers participating in the program. Favorable harvest conditions, combined with stronger producer engagement, have allowed the project to continue growing organically within the community.

In 2024, for the first time, these growers began delivering carefully harvested, fully ripe red Bourbon cherries to Beneficio La Esperanza, the wet mill operated by Los Volcanes Coffee. This collaboration introduced a new level of traceability, process consistency, and post-harvest control, allowing each producer’s work to shine through in the cup — and connecting their coffee to specialty buyers seeking both transparency and excellence.

As word of the project has spread among neighboring communities, more producers have shown interest in participating. A key part of this growth has been the commitment to paying prices above the local market, creating better economic opportunities for producers and their families. Equally important has been the focus on providing direct feedback to each producer regarding cup quality, processing, and overall coffee performance — helping create a stronger connection between their work in the field and the final quality of the coffee.

Many of the producers involved in Ojo de Agua come from families that have grown coffee for generations — working the land with intimate knowledge of its seasons and potential. The name "Ojo de Agua", meaning spring of water, reflects both the natural abundance of the region and the quiet resilience of those who live and farm here.

It also speaks to the purpose of this project: to be a source of renewal — economically, socially, and environmentally — for the producers and their communities.

At Los Volcanes, we believe that when we invest in local talent, honor legacy practices, and offer tools for innovation, extraordinary things happen. Proyecto Ojo de Agua is proof of that: a project built not just on coffee, but on trust, collaboration, and a shared vision for what the future of Guatemalan coffee can be.
